We are inviting you to participate at the international conference European Values, Member States and the Future of the EU held in Zagreb, on 5 and 6 December 2019, organized by Centre for Democracy and Law Miko Tripalo, as part of the Centre’s Jean Monnet project European Values in a New Member State: Croatia in the First Five Years of EU Membership ( The first day of the conference (5 December) will be held in Europe’s House, and the second day (6 December) in Aula of the University of Zagreb. The aim of the project is to better understand European values as a fundamental element of the European integration process and the European project as a whole.

This two-day conference will bring together experts who study different areas of European values, representatives of civil society organizations, media, unions, public officials, judges and scientists who research values in an interdisciplinary way. Through their presentations, conference participants will examine the role that European values play in different member states, but also their role in the re-evaluation and reaffirmation of the European project.

The purpose of the conference is to answer several key questions regarding the future of Europe and Croatia in the European context, such as: How can Europe, as an area of freedom, respond to reactions against “too much freedom” and the rise of populism? What are the consequences of the solidarity policy and can the solidarity narrative become a major element of divergence between EU member states? What is the reason for the rule of law becoming less and less valued lately in some member states? How to preserve a multicultural, multinational democratic political system, based on the ideas of freedom, solidarity and rule of law in a time of significant decline of citizen participation in political activities?

The conference will include Croatian and foreign experts, and the working languages of the conference will be Croatian and English with simultaneous translation provided. The program of the conference can be found in attachment.
